Refinishing furniture

Years and years ago Doug built us a bed. It's been in storage for the last 9 years. We had been looking for furniture for Maddie and had discussed using this bed, but I didn't really want to paint it. However, in the end, I decided that it was much better to paint the thing and get it out of storage than for it to sit and eventually rot.

 

So, this morning Doug went and got the bed and we started sanding. (side note: squatting and sanding is hard work. even more so after a 10 mile run!)

 

Doug and I both worked on sanding the bed.

 

Here is one the baseboard with one coat of paint! I love it. I wish we had done this sooner!

 

We are also refinishing a dresser and a curio cabinet too. I figure I'm already filthy and hot, I might as well knock it all out in one day! 



 

So why am I inside taking a break? Well, it's 2pm and 93+ degrees and everything is drying. I'll go back out in a little while and do a light sanding on everything and spray another coat.

 

I can't wait to show you the finished furniture in Maddie's room!

 

The Finished Table, the Chairs in Progress and Two Adorable Girls.

The red table is finished. It's been so humid around here that I didn't want to put poly on it. So finally yesterday I was able to get it finished.  I love it.

If the recipient isn't in love with it, I'll take it back for my craft table :)

With the table finished, it was on to the chairs.

 Lots and lots of sanding required.

About an hour in...

Over an hour of sanding and only the top half of the chair is sanded. WOW!!

And what did Kylie and Lexi do while I was occupied?

Well, after the required fussing and fighting, they settled unto the kid couch that's been living in the garage.  They drug it out into the yard and looked adorable I must say!

 

The Red Table

Not finished yet.

But it looks pretty cool.

Much better than the putty color I must say...

You can see in the pictures that the red isn't completely covering the old paint,
but I like how the new paint has darkened the "age" spots!

This is with three or four coats of red spray paint.  I'm thinking I'll do a couple of more and call it good.

Then it's on to refinishing the chairs in a glossy black.

The Table Project.. Part 1

A family member is getting ready to move into a new apartment. She needs a new table. We found this one for a great price, but the finish was an uninspiring putty color. So.... yep, I said I would paint it. And that began THE TABLE PROJECT. Cause you just can't paint the sucker. It had to be sanded.

I was really hoping that all it would take would be a light sand to knock the finish off. But alas, NO!  The putty color immediately started pulling away from the blue if you picked at it.  I'm guessing the putty color was latex, the blue was enamel. Cause they sure didn't bond well! Of course, they bonded well enough for me to have to work hard to get the paint off though :)!

A couple of hours and lots of hand sanding later, I was covered in green/blue/putty colored dust particles.  But the table looked great.  I really wish I could just poly it and go from there.  It looks really, really cool in person. But that's not the desired finish, and since it isn't my table (it just feels like it now!) I'll finish it the way the family member wants.
