Art and Soul Painting Class

On Saturday afternoon I had a painting class at church (First Presbyterian Church, Stephenville). I invited my friends to come paint a nativity scene. And boy did they show up!

I had 40 people painting. It was so much fun!

We had moms and kids, friends and church members.

Here are a few pictures of everyone painting.

It was a little crazy.

Thankfully Doug and Maddie didn't paint and helped by taking care of refreshments and ran interference with Kylie!!

And here are some of the finished products.

Everyone did great!!

I LOVE this picture!! :) :)

I realized this morning at church that I didn't get a picture of Lexi and Kylie together with their finished pieces, so here they are.

This event was such a success that I can't wait for the next one.

I'm thinking February...

A few more highlights from paradise

Taking time out for "just us" is so very important! With careers, school, kids and countless daily demands, taking a few days to rest and just be together helps Doug and me to connect and chill. I can't recommend taking a vacation alone enough. I know it's expensive and hard to get a way, but WORTH IT!!

Yep, that's my soapbox. If your relationship is at the bottom of the priority list, and you can't remember the last time you and your significant other had a couple of days away for just the two of you to reconnect, then oh my. It's time!!

So, anyway.. Doug and I went back to the El Dorado Casitas Royale. This is by no means a paid endorsement for them. I WISH!!! But we have been three years in a row! :)

Here are a few of my hundred or so pictures of our time in Mexico.

I have to include food pictures as this is a "Gourmet Inclusive" resort...

Yes, we very much enjoy the food!!

And I couldn't not run or do handstands! The workers enjoyed my handstand antics.

The "room" is pretty nice too. We stayed at one of the swim-up casitas. I am so spoiled! You get to pick your pillow style/firmness and even choose aromatherapy for the daytime and a different one for the evening.

You can even order room service 24 hours a day.

Every day the room butler would create a towel decoration for the bed!

And then of course there is the beach. Oh how listening to the sound of the ocean calms my soul.

After a few days here, I am ready to go home to my girls, but there is something magical about this place!
See you next time!!

And if Karisma would like to send me to check out their other resorts and review them... I am READY!! :)

Exhaustion

It's been a difficult couple of days.  On Thursday evening, while I was in Houston for work (5 hours away from home) Doug went to the emergency room with chest pains and shortness of breath. He called from the hospital and said that they were running tests.  My friend Mindy, that I was in Houston with, and I discussed what to do.  We decided to wait to see what the results showed. A couple of hours later the numbers that look at to see if you are having a heart attack were up a little, so they did the blood test again.  After a couple more hours, and conversations with the nurse at the hospital and my sister that is a nurse, Mindy and I loaded up our stuff and headed home.  About half way home,  Doug called to say that he was being sent home with "unspecified chest pains."  We got home at 4am.

I don't know what I would have done without Mindy.  She drove the entire trip and never batted an eye at leaving early and not being able to stay for important meetings. I am so very thankful for her!

I finally got in bed and dozed a little from 4am to 6am on Friday morning, but Kylie was on top of me and sleep was elusive.  I got the girls to school and worked on my grad class some while Doug tried to figure out what to do.  My sister Libby went to work, so thankful that she is a cardiac nurse.. and talked to one of the cardiologists that she really respects.  He said that Friday was a really bad day to try to get into a cardiologist, that he could see Doug on Monday, but that given Doug's family history, if he continued to have pain and shortness of breath to come to Ft Worth to the big heart hospital and tell the ER that Doug was a patient of his.

Well, after a couple of hours of Doug still not feeling well, I finally just asked him if he was going to be okay feeling like this till Monday. He said no. So we packed up our stuff, got in the car and drove to the hospital in Ft. Worth.

One thing I can say, when you walk into an emergency room with chest pain, they don't play games or make you wait! I was really impressed with the level of concern, how quickly they worked and the quality of the staff.  Doug was immediately put on an ekg machine in the triage area and within probably 5 minutes he was in a room in the ER. They did some repeat tests that they did the night before and asked a truck load of questions.

Libby got off work and walked over to the emergency room and found us.  I have to say, having a sister that works in a big hospital is a blessing.  Having a sister that works in cardiac care is gift. But having a sister that is well respected and loved by others in a big hospital is beyond compare.  We were sitting in our ER room and I heard Libby's voice and then a chorus of "hey Libby" 's and greetings and asking what she was doing over here and such from the staff as she made it to our room.  Then as staff entered to work on Doug, they would stop and talk.  The doctor, the nurse, the pharmacist, they all new her and respected her.. you could tell by the way they interacted with her.  WHAT A GIFT!

Anyway, the cardiologist on call with the group that Libby wanted Doug to see came and consulted with us and suggested a plan of action.  We were in complete agreement and Doug was admitted.

They did a CT scan with dye of Doug's heart.  This is not the typical protocol, but one used for athletes with major family history of heart disease.

I left the hospital and made it home around 9pm.  I had to get a couple of my discussions completed for my grad class and finally got to bed around 10:30.  That was a LONG, LONG time between sleeps!

This morning Maddie had to be at school at 7:30 for her first WinterGuard contest. I dropped her off and worked on school work for a little while and drove back into the city. I got to the hospital a little before 11.

The cardiologist on call came in at 11:45am with the all clear. No plaque, No calcium. NOTHING! This was HUGE.  Doug's dad had his first heart surgery at 38 with many, many problems in the years following until his death eleven years ago.  Doug is 47 and has been on blood pressure and heart meds for 20 years. As Doug and the doctor discussed, these tests results were equivalent to a huge burden being lifted that has been resting on Doug's shoulders for years.

We then spent the next 6 hours waiting to be released from the hospital.  THAT WAS NOT FUN! It was crazy.  The nurse even said at one point, well... it is raining... that was very frustrating.  But given that Doug had just been given the gift of a clean bill of health, I was trying to be patient.

We finally made it home about 8pm.

It is now 10:15 and I'm waiting to go get Maddie from school...she won't be home for another hour.

Needlesstosay, I am exhausted.  I am beyond thankful for friends and family that have stepped into the gap these last couple of days. I don't want to think about how hard this would have been without them.

So where do we go from here? I don't know.  I know that Doug didn't have a heart attack and that his heart is healthy. Something we did not expect.  As to the "unspecified chest pains," that's the official statement on the release papers from today as well.  But as I told Mindy on Thursday night, I am used to living in the land of no easy answers and in the middle of grey area.  Why did Doug have horrible chest pains? no clue. Probably a mix of a respiratory virus, asthma, allergies and stress. Amazing what a few doses of morphine and nitroglycerin will do for a body.

And how am I doing with all of this? Good. except for a few tears when talking to one of Doug's best friends and asking him to go to the hospital to be with Doug while Mindy and I drove home, I've been pretty even keel. but now, I am tired.

And I have a dirty house and lots of laundry.

But I have a healthy husband. Thank God.

Our Sweet Sixteenth

I wanted to make something cool for Doug to celebrate our 16th anniversary. I decided the best gift I could give him was a virtual craft that doesn't make a mess!!!

I also was going to do one of those cool counting things like.. 3 kids, 7 jobs, 8 houses... and all of that, but I decided that since I'm on vacation I shouldn't have to work that hard counting!!

The most important thing I can say to my love is that I wouldn't change a thing about our journey.

We have struggled through what life has thrown at us with grace.

As a couple we have shown mercy to others.

As a family we love each other and others daily.

We have walked through dark times believing that there was hope and continue to believe for the future.

We have enough faith to ask hard questions that don't seem to have answers.

The last 16 years have been an adventure.

We have lived well.

I can't wait to see what the next 16 years will bring!

The Cowtown Marathon Weekend 2014

The Cowtown Marathon Weekend is truly a running highlight of our year! There is just something incredible about the Cowtown Marathon (located in Fort Worth, Texas)
I think even if we were not runners, we would still feel this way.
The energy and excitement is palpable from the time you pull up at the expo on Friday until you cross the finish line on Sunday morning. But given that Doug and I are both runners, and this is a "local" race, we take full advantage of the entire weekend experience!

For those of you who do not know about the Cowtown Marathon, it is the oldest and largest multi-race, multi-day event in Texas. Around 30 THOUSAND total runners compete in the races on Saturday and Sunday. The city doesn't come to a complete halt, but almost! The streets are closed and people stand for miles and miles cheering and offering support to the runners.

It is truly and incredible event! (wow.. nice unpaid commercial..)

Anyway, on Saturday morning my sister Libby, my friend Crystal and I joined about 8 thousand other runners and ran the 10k. It was jam packed, but fun! Don't you love the pictures from marathonfoto! No, I don't mind pasting the proofs in as I will be purchasing all of the photos!

As the 10k is finishing up, the Adult 5k starts with another 6 thousand runners or so... Here is Doug with some of my friends from the run club I run with.

All of us ran on Saturday so that we could qualify for the Cowtown Challenge: running both days and getting an extra medal! :)

Once the morning races are over, we putter around the rest of the day, using our "fueling" needs to excuse our eating habits! We had lunch at In and Out Burgers. Yummy!! We had never had them before, won't be the last time.

Doug and I enjoyed walking around a shopping area and just hanging out. Something we rarely get to do!! For dinner, we went to Chuy's and enjoyed mexican food.

Sunday morning brought the half marathon, full marathon and the ultra runners. We ALL started at the same time. I don't know how many runners, but I'm thinking at least 15 THOUSAND runners starting at the SAME TIME. It is craziness.

Here we are in the corrals waiting for the start. Way off in the distance you can see the starting line.

Here are Crystal and I on the course. We were sllloooowww, but we had fun!

Here I am at the finish line. Yes, I was pumped to be finished!

My time was way off from what I know I can do, but it reflected my training of late. I finished strong and happy, so in the end, I can't be upset with my sad time. I just have to be honest with my self and my expectations. If I want to run faster, I have to train faster and more consistently. I've been in a post marathon slump for a few months, I feel like I have finally come out of it and am ready to train!

Here I am with Doug after the race. He ran a strong 1/2 marathon for his second 1/2 ever. He is already talking about training for his next one!

And here Crystal and I are. We are absolutely 2 peas in a pod. We have the same mindset and are the same level of crazy and motivated. We scare our husbands. :) Good thing they are friends too!

And finally, a close up of the weekend bling! Love the spur finisher medal! Can't wait to get another oen next year!

Anniversaries and Football

Doug and I celebrated our 15th anniversary the day after Christmas.

Yes, we got married on December 26th.
If you already know the story why, skip down...

So, why did we get married the day after Christmas?

Simple... Texas High School Football!

It was the era of Art Briles at Stephenville High School and Doug and I were both teachers there. When we got engaged in June of 1998 and were discussing wedding plans, my dad said that he had missed one state game for me (had to pick me up from the airport after I had been in England for a semester of college..) and he didn't want to miss another.

So, even though it was JUNE... we went and reserved the church for the Saturday AFTER the state game... the day after Christmas!

Turns out to have been a pretty smart call.

We won state that year.

Doug and I joke that we should have just gotten married at half-time at Cowboy Stadium on the star! Our friends, some family and our students were there!

I'm guessing only in the great state of Texas do people plan weddings around a high school football game... especially when they don't even have a family member in the game!

Anyway...

To commemorate our anniversary, Doug got me a watch. Not just any watch, but a Coach watch to match my purse! He said that since my purse was a reminder of my weight loss journey, the matching watch would be a reminder of our love and life together.

That's romantic stuff.

I was equally romantic.... I got Doug a garage door opener. Ouch. Good thing he doesn't love me for my romantic gestures!

(Hey, but I did do a romantic gift last year... remember the wedding dress photo shoot?)

So Friday night we got a babysitter and spent the night in Fort Worth. It's so nice to get a way once in a while!! Here we are at Taverna, a really awesome Italian restaurant in Sundance Square (downtown). It was soo good!

We have aged a bit.. but we are still looking good and enjoy each other's company! Not bad for 15 years!!

Family Sledding

Family Sledding. NOT something we do in central Texas!

(for non-Texas people reading this blog.. our normal winter is one or two really cold days, maybe one day of ice and back up into the 40's!)

But yesterday we (and a bunch of other people!) did!!

We had so much fun!

Maddie is holding our best sled! It's one of Doug's campaign signs from years ago. There is just something about Coroplast (plastic cardboard) that lets you FLY down the hill!

I love the picture below. All three girls just loving life!

Doug did some pretty fancy sledding.

The girls played together. That was a treat!

Kylie's favorite thing was making snowballs iceballs and throwing them at us.

The most EPIC part of the day....
scroll down to see it.

It is worth it.

The participants are Doug and Maddie ...

keep going, it's worth it.

Priceless!

And yes, he is okay.

If he hadn't been it wouldn't have been priceless...
I know how much orthopedic visits cost!
